  35. This is the second beta release of the mach8 FlexDesk Windows Driver.
  36.  
  37. The mach8 FlexDesk Windows Driver is an enhanced mode driver that will 
  38. work only on 80386 and 80486-based systems.  
  39.  
  40. Unlike previous mach8 drivers, where the user must go into Windows Setup 
  41. and select another driver every time a resolution or font environment 
  42. change is required, the mach8 FlexDesk Windows driver is a single driver 
  43. that contains all resolutions, font environments, color depths, and 
  44. additional features.
  45.  
  46. Once the mach8 FlexDesk driver is installed and Windows is started, you 
  47. will notice an ATI Utlities Group that contains the ATI mach8 FlexDesk 
  48. icon.   
  49.  
  50. Clicking on the icon will open the FlexDesk Control Panel.  
  51. This panel gives you easy access to color depths, screen resolutions,
  52. CRYSTAL Fonts in all resolutions (256 color modes only), different font
  53. environments (in logical dots per inch - LDPI), and the ability to 
  54. disable the color pallette for greater performance.
  55.  
  56. The FlexDesk Control Panel will automatically edit the WIN.INI file and 
  57. restart Windows.
  58.  
  59. We are confident this beta release will solve most of the problems you 
  60. have been experiencing with the current mach8 drivers, as well as provide 
  61. more features, flexibility, and significantly increased performance.
  62.  
  63. If you do come accross any problems, please report them as soon as 
  64. possible by fax or CompuServe to the mach8 beta coordinator, using the 
  65. attached form.  This will give us the opportunity to clear up any 
  66. remaining problems and ensure that the production release of this driver 
  67. is as clean as possible.

  69. Installation
  70.                     
  71. To install this release, if it was downloaded from Compserve, please
  72. unpack the distribution files onto a diskette, or to a separate directory,
  73. prior to running the INSTALL Program. (See next paragraph)
  74.  
  75. Run the supplied INSTALL.EXE utility. Specify the diskette or directory 
  76. containing the driver, then your Windows directory.
  77.  
  78. Use the Microsoft Windows SETUP utility (from DOS), and select the "ATI
  79. mach8 Driver". This will complete the driver installation. To restore your
  80. previous display driver, run SETUP, and reselect the old driver.
  81.  
  82. To change resolution or color depth, please run the FlexDesk Control Panel
  83. that was installed into Windows. The driver initially comes up in 640x480
  84. 16 color mode. Other modes can be easily selected from the FlexDesk
  85. Control Panel.
  86.  
  87. This driver supports the ATI 38800 (mach8) with 512KB or 1MB of memory.
  88. Both 16 and 256 color modes are supported in resolutions of 640x480,
  89. 800x600 and 1024x768. 1280x1024 support is provided in 16 colors only.
  90.  
  91. Only modes supported by your card will be enabled in the FlexDesk driver.
  92. Unsupported modes will be greyed out.
  93.  
  94. FlexDesk will only work with Windows in 386 Enhanced Mode. To use the
  95. mach8 on a 286 based processor, or in Windows Standard Mode, use the
  96. supplied Microsoft 8514/A driver.
  97.  
  98. Crystal Fonts is supported in this beta.
  99.  
  100.  
  101. 2.0     Reporting Bugs
  102.  
  103. When reporting problems with this driver, please reference the driver
  104. build number. When in doubt about the build number, call up the FlexDesk
  105. Control Panel, and read the build number. If the build number is not
  106. available (NA), then
  107.  
  108. (a)     You may not be running the FlexDesk driver. Check that one of the
  109.         MACH-??.DRV files is referenced in SYSTEM.INI.
  110.  
  111. (b)     Your bug may be preventing the Control Panel from reading the
  112.         driver build number. Try restarting Windows, and if this does not
  113.         remedy the problem, report the Date, Time and Size of the driver
  114.         (MACH.DRV file).
  115.  
  116. (c)     You may be using BitStream Facelift 2.0. If you are using this
  117.         Typeface Manager, report the Date, Time and Size of the driver
  118.         (MACH.DRV file).
  119.  
  120. BETA TESTER'S RESPONSIBILITIES

  122. In order to make the mach8 Beta Program successful, ATI needs your 
  123. prompt action on the following:

  125.      - Install and use the drivers promptly.
  126.      - Test the product for reliability, useability, and robustness.
  127.      - Complete and return the enclosed Problem Report Forms.

  129. Although we have put much effort into the verification of this driver, 
  130. it is still pre-release software.  We strongly suggest you back up any 
  131. important existing data/programs before installing or running the mach8 
  132. driver.

  214. 4.0     Requirements
  215.  
  216. FlexDesk requires an ATI 38800 (mach8) based graphics controller. The
  217. driver is designed to work best with Windows 3.1. Windows 3.0 operation is
  218. possible, at the expense of some features and performance. Windows must be
  219. in Enhanced mode for FlexDesk to run.
  220.  
  221. A minimum of 512KB of Video Memory is required for FlexDesk operation.

  237. This should only be attempted if the Automatic Install Fails!!

  239. Manual installation of the FlexDesk driver is not recommended. Use the
  240. Microsoft SETUP utility to initially install the driver, and then use the
  241. FlexDesk Control Panel to make modifications to the setup. This section
  242. serves to document the various changes that are made to the SYSTEM.INI and
  243. WIN.INI files. For more information on the [Mach] settings, see the
  244. Configuration section.

  299. Each of the shell drivers (MACH-??.DRV) has suggested Windows default
  300. colors. In order to make use of these colors, you can delete the entries
  301. in the WIN.INI [colors] section. This will prevent inadvertently selecting
  302. colors that make the menu entries disappear.

  305. 6.0     Configuration Settings

  313. THAT AFFECT THE OPERATION OF WINDOWS. IF PROBLEM APPEAR AFTER CHANGES
  314. HAVE BEEN MADE, WE SUGGEST THAT YOU CHANGE THEM BACK TO ORIGINAL SETTINGS
  315. PRIOR TO CALLING ATI.

  317. WE ALSO SUGGEST YOU SAVE COPIES OF YOUR WIN.INI AND SYSTEM.INI PRIOR TO
  318. MAKING ANY CHANGES.
  319.  
  320. The [Mach] section of WIN.INI has many switches which can be tailored to
  321. change FlexDesk. Most of the switches are alterable via the FlexDesk
  322. Control Panel, and this is the preferred way to change them.
  323.  
  324. CacheCharacters         = on | off                      Default on
  325.  
  326. Allow for caching characters into the off-screen memory area. Edit WIN.INI
  327. [Mach] directly to modify this setting.
  328.  
  329. DesktopSize             = 640 | 800 | 1024 | 1280       Default 640

  331. Choose size of Windows work area. The screen may be smaller than the work
  332. area (see ScreenSize setting), in which case the Virtual Desktop feature
  333. is activated. Use the mouse to pan the display over the desktop. 640
  334. selects 640x480, 800 selects 800x600, 1024 selects 1024x768 and 1280
  335. selects 1280x1024. All modes have 4:3 aspect (which results in square
  336. pixels), except 1280. (1280x1024 is a 5:4 pixel ratio. Square pixels 4:3
  337. with 1280 would be 1280x960). Edit WIN.INI [Mach] directly to modify this
  338. setting.

  340. Dithering               = on | off                      Default on
  341.  
  342. Allow for disabling color dithering. This results in faster performance,
  343. at the expense of color fidelity. Edit WIN.INI [Mach] directly to modify
  344. this setting.
  345.  
  346. DeviceBitmap            = on | off                      Default on
  347.  
  348. Allow for realizing bitmaps in the off-screen memory area. For some
  349. applications (for example BitStream Facelift), this feature must be turned
  350. off. Use the FlexDesk Control Panel to modify this setting.

  352. DeviceBitmapDraw        = on | off                      Default off

  354. Allow the drawing engine to draw into realized bitmaps. DeviceBitmap=on
  355. must be set for this to have any effect. Edit WIN.INI [Mach] directly to

  364. When set on, all startup errors are treated as fatal, and will result in
  365. returning to the DOS prompt. When set to off, a message is displayed and
  366. the user is invited to press <D> to return to the DOS prompt, or <I> to
  367. ignore the error and continue. Edit WIN.INI [Mach] directly to modify this
  368. setting.

  370. PaletteManager          = on | off                      Default on
  371.  
  372. Enable palette management when PixelDepth=8. This allows applications to
  373. control the physical palette, and permits applications such as After Dark
  374. to do palette cycling animation. When the PaletteManage is off, the color
  375. mode will use a fixed 332 (3 bits Red, 3 bits Green, 2 bits Blue) palette.
  376. Use the FlexDesk Control Panel to modify this setting.
  377.  
  378. Pixel                   = on | off                      Default off
  379.  
  380. Enable put and get pixel through the engine. Can improve performance when
  381. aperture is disabled.
  382.  
  383. PixelDepth              = 4 | 8                         Default 8

  385. Choose number of bits per pixel. 4 allows 16 colors, and 8 allows 256
  386. colors. Use the FlexDesk Control Panel to modify this setting.

  390. When set on, Polygons are accelerated by the drawing engine. Edit WIN.INI
  391. [Mach] directly to modify this setting.

  410. When on, VGA style dithering is used (when in 256 color palette manager
  411. enabled mode). When off, a faster dithering algorithm is used. Use the
  412. FlexDesk Control Panel to modify this setting.

  414. StretchBlt              = on | off                      Default on
  415.  
  416. Enable driver StretchBlt when on. If set to off, GDI StretchBlt will be
  417. used instead. Edit WIN.INI [Mach] directly to modify this setting.

  419. VGADAC                  = on | off                      Default off
  420.  
  421. Program VGA DAC in synch with 8514/A DAC registers. Edit WIN.INI [Mach]
  422. directly to modify this setting.

  424. WIFE                    = on | off                      Default off
  425.  
  426. Support Windows Intelligent Font Extensions (MBCS support). This allows
  427. FlexDesk to be used with Asian Windows versions. Do not turn this switch
  428. on with North American Windows. WIFE will just slow down your system. Edit
  429. WIN.INI [Mach] directly to modify this setting.
  430.  
  431. CrystalFonts            = on | off                      Default off
  432.  
  433. When set on, enables the CRYSTAL Font feature. When CRYSTAL Fonts is
  434. enabled, the palette is fixed in 8 bpp non- programmable mode. 5 gradients
  435. of red, blue and green (125 colors) are available in the palette. Also the
  436. usual 20 Windows system colors are supported, and 16 shades of gray
  437. (including black and white). The remainder of the palette is unused.
  438.  
  439. GSFonts                 = <path: c:\gsfonts>            Default NONE
  440.  
  441. If this entry is specified, the directory path is used to search for the
  442. CRYSTAL Font outlines. If not specified (normal), the environment variable
  443. GSFONTS is used instead.
  444.  
  445. MinFontSize             = <number: 0..255>              Default 8
  446.  
  447. Minimum height of a font in pixels to be anti-aliased (CRYSTAL Fonts). If
  448. a font renders to less than MinFontSize, it is not anti-aliased. This
  449. allows very small characters to remain legible.
  450.  
  451. SystemFont              = <font>                        Default HelveticaBold
  452.  
  453. Allows the Windows System Font to be specified when CrystalFonts=on. This
  454. font is used for Icon titles, menus, etc. This entry should be used with
  455. Windows 3.0 only, because Windows 3.1 allows changing the System font
  456. through its own mechanism.
  457.  
  458. TextGamma               = <number: 20..300>             Default 100
  459.  
  460. This setting controls the edge sharpness for the CRYSTAL Fonts feature.
  461. Higher values lighten up the edge pixels, giving you "thinner" characters.
  462.  
  463.  
  464. The following settings are recommended to maximize performance on mach8
  465. hardware:
  466.

  477. 7.0     Crystal Font Installation
  478.  
  479. If you've installed this beta then crystal fonts is ready to go. Bring up
  480. the FlexDesk Control Panel and choose 256 colors then click on the Crystal
  481. Font button. Set this dialog box as desired and Crystal is running.
  482.  
  483. To set System Font for program manager edit your WIN.INI file, [MACH]
  484. section, SystemFont value.
  485.

  492. To set Icon title font and size for program manager edit your WIN.INI

  501. The CRYSTAL Fonts feature can use Windows 3.1 TrueType fonts and ATI GSF
  502. format fonts. Use of GSF fonts requires that the CRYSTAL fonts be placed
  503. in a directory. In the WIN.INI file set GsFonts in the [Mach] section to
  504. the directory the fonts are in prior to running the driver. GSFONTS are
  505. not currently distributed, as they have been superceded by TrueType. See
  506. Configuration setting of this document for details on the Crystal Fonts
  507. settings (CrystalFonts, GSFonts, MinFontSize, SystemFont and TextGamma).
  508.  
  509.  
  510. 8.0     Errors
  511.  
  512. All FlexDesk error messages are issued at startup. The error message is
  513. displayed, and the system speaker is beeped. You are then invited to press
  514. a key to return to DOS. This behavior can be modified to allow the
  515. operator to ignore the error and proceed (see the ErrorFatal switch).
  516.  
  517. Errors:
  518.  
  519. The ATI FlexDesk Windows Driver requires an ATI 68800 or 38800 based
  520. video board or product.
  521.  
  522. The BIOS ROM cannot be accessed. Please refer to your owners manual
  523. for hardware setup assistance.
  524.  
  525. The ROM BIOS Query has returned a failure. Please ensure that the BIOS ROM
  526. is enabled, and that you have set up at least one video mode.
  527.  
  528. You have insufficient Video Memory to run a ???x???/??? video mode. Run
  529. Windows SETUP from DOS and select a lower resolution mode.
  530.  
  531. The ATI FlexDesk Windows Driver requires Windows to be run in 386 Enhanced
  532. Mode. Select the Microsoft 8514/A Driver to use your video board with
  533. a 286 based processor, or to use Windows in Standard Mode. If necessary,
  534. Windows Enhanced Mode can be forced on a 386 base processor by starting
  535. Windows using the WIN /3 command. This is required on machines with less
  536. than 4 Mb of system memory.
  537.  
  538. The ATI FlexDesk Windows Driver cannot be started. No additional information
  539. is available. Probable cause is insufficient resources or general
  540. system failure. Please ensure system integrity and retry. If the
  541. problem persists, contact customer support services with the following
  542. error code: ???.
  543.  
  544. The ???x??? mode cannot be started. Please ensure that you have
  545. installed the requested mode using the Mach8 or Mach32 INSTALL utility.
  546. Your selected monitor may not be capable of operating in the requested
  547. mode - if this is the case, run Windows setup from DOS and select
  548. a compatible mode.
  549.  
  550. The ATI FlexDesk Windows Driver cannot be started. The BIOS ROM has failed to
  551. activate the requested mode. Please contact customer support services.
  552.  
  553. The BIOS ROM on your ATI Accelerator does not appear to support the
  554. functions required by the ATI FlexDesk Windows Driver. Please install the
  555. Microsoft 8514/A driver using the Windows SETUP utility.
  556.
